The Super Visor

When the helmet of Ferrari driver Felipe Massa was struck by an F1 suspension spring the vulnerability of the visor area was exposed.

That racing incident prompted the latest design tweak to motor sport’s finest head protector. A Zylon strip (a synthetic polymer) across the visor will make the already super-tough 8860 standard helmet tougher still.

To improve this weaker area of the helmet the 50mm Zylon strip has been added across the top of the visor which significantly enhances protection. The new visor adds about 70 grams to the weight of the visor doubling its impact performance, and is placed in a fashion so as not to further restrict driver vision.

The FIA Institute and helmet manufacturers are currently researching further use of high-performance optical materials such as transparent ceramics.
