ASN Safety Bulletin #40 Karting Protective Clothing
03 Apr 2024 > Safety Bulletin
@FIA Karting / KSP
Dear Colleagues,
Competitor safety is a top priority for the FIA, and is as important at the grassroots entry point to competition as it is at the very highest levels of our sport. Karting clothing plays a crucial role as one of the first standardised pieces of safety equipment that drivers will come across in their careers.
ASN Internal Talking Point: How does your organisation promote competitor safety at grassroots level? The perception of safety is especially important for young competitors - and their parents! Think about how you can deploy these safety messages to potential new members...
The FIA delivers safety standards that set a minimum safety performance level, with the goal of covering every category of karting and protecting everyone, regardless of budget.
FIA Standards:
The CIK-FIA N2013-1 standard sets minimum safety requirements for Level 1 (leisure activities only) and Level 2 karting overalls, while FIA Standard 8877-2022 sets minimum safety requirements for Grade 1 – similar to Level 2 – (for use on short circuits) and Grade 2 (for use on short and long circuits). Furthermore, FIA Standard 8877-2022 also sets design and minimum safety requirements for karting shoes and karting gloves.
These two safety standards set out the specifications for garments to be used in karting events, with the aim to enhance safety and minimise the risk of injury caused by abrasion in case of an accident.
To help competitors access the most effective and reliable protective clothing for karting, the FIA has created two technical lists: the technical list for karting overalls approved according to the CIK-FIA N2013-1 standard, which can be downloaded HEREor by scanning QR Code #1; and TL101 for all karting garments (overalls, gloves and shoes) approved according to FIA Standard 8877-2022, which provides detailed information for each of these karting garments. This document can be downloaded HERE or by scanning QR Code #2.

To assist with scrutineering activities, all karting overalls, karting shoes and karting gloves approved according to FIA Standard 8877-2022 have their own presentation form that can be downloaded via the technical list.
These two safety standards set out the specifications for garments to be used in karting events, with the aim to enhance safety and minimise the risk of injury caused by abrasion in case of an accident.
Customisation:
Customisation may only be carried out by the manufacturer to minimise the impact on the safety performance of the karting overalls – it is important that your members are aware of this and of the safety risks that come with non-approved customisation. In case of doubt regarding the addition of advertising (print/transfer, badge, embroidery), it is highly recommended to contact the clothing manufacturer.
For karting overalls approved according to FIA Standard 8877-2022, any customisation made by applying transfers or by printing must be carried out by the manufacturer and a customisation certificate must be issued showing these modifications.
Ensuring inclusivity:
Karting overalls may be customised to suit the needs of a karting competitor with disabilities. These modifications must be carried out solely by the manufacturer and a customisation certificate must be issued showing these modifications.
Implementation:
Karting overalls are approved according to the CIK-FIA N2013-1 standard or FIA Standard 8877-2022. In conformity with the Karting Technical Regulations, competitors are currently allowed to opt between these two standards, but from 01.01.2030, only karting overalls approved according to FIA Standard 8877-2022 will be accepted.
For 2024, karting competitors are allowed to opt between karting gloves and shoes approved according to FIA Standard 8877-2022, or gloves that completely cover the hands and wrists and karting shoes that completely cover the feet and extend up to the ankles. From 01.01.2025, in all FIA Karting Championships, Cups and Trophies and all Karting competitions on the FIA International Sporting Calendar, the use of karting gloves and karting shoes approved according to FIA Standard 8877-2022 will be mandatory.
Best regards,
FIA Safety Department
